What's an English Chick?
My online nickname has been "Joan the English Chick" since sometime in early 1993. It's because I was an English (literature) major in college. I took the nickname as an homage to Katherine the Art Chick, my Evil Twin. (Guess what her major was?)
People sometimes assume that "the English Chick" means I am from England. Alas, this is not the case. I am just another silly American who majored in English and now feels qualified to correct your grammar. ;-)
Family and Environment
I was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in nearby Cambridge. My mom, a research nurse, still lives in the apartment where I grew up. She moved in there before I was born, and now she lives there by herself. Our cat Toes died in June 1999 at the ripe old age of 20. :-( My mom now has two new cats, and I currently live in Waltham, MA, with my new cat, Bini. For a while there, I was living with Katherine the Art Chick (see above) and her five cats. Click here for lots and lots of kitty pictures.
My brother, Bart, is about three years younger than me. I could tell you all about him, but you might as well figure it out from his webpage.

Interests
The following are some of my interests. I used to have individual webpages about each of these, but I lacked the wherewithal to maintain them, so I've taken them down. You can find links relating to each of these, plus lots more, on my links page.
- English Literature (you can still check out my grammar tutorials)
- Musicology (the study of the theory and history of music). I also enjoy listening to music, and I play the piano. I'm also a member of the Cambridge Community Chorus.
- Paganism. I've been an "officially" practicing pagan of one form or another since 1990 or '91.
- Alternate sexuality. You know, I've had a webpage that openly proclaimed myself bisexual for several years now, and I haven't had a single flame. Is the 'net getting more open-minded, or have I just been lucky?
- Science Fiction. I love to read, and also to watch TV. My favorite authors include Heinlein, Asimov, Neal Stephenson, Connie Willis, Terry Pratchett and Lois McMaster Bujold. Read my book reviews! My favorite television shows include Babylon Five, Buffy, Farscape, X-Files, older Star Trek, and Xena: Warrior Princess.
