Notes

(Verse 1)
A long, long time ago...
I can still remember how
That blood-lust used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my way,
That I could rule the world someday,
And maybe I'd be happy for a while.
But Gabrielle helped me to see,
With every life that fell to me,
Bad news in my heart...
I had to make a brand new start.
I can't remember if I cried
When Gabrielle became a bride
But something touched me deep inside,
The day the warrior died.
So...

(Refrain)
Bye bye Warrior Princess, bye,
Saw my soul in the mirror and the mirror don't lie.
That warrior girl was lookin me in the eye,
Singing "This'll be the day that I die,
This'll be the day that I die."

(Verse 2)
Did you write the scroll of love,
And do you have faith in Zeus above,
If Aphrodite tells you so?
Now do you believe in letting go?
Can true love save my mortal soul?
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?
Well I know you were in love with him
But I couldn't speak, my heart was grim
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I cried, these baby blues.
I was a lonely aching angry mess
With a deadly chakram and all the rest
But I knew that I could start afresh
The day the warrior died
I started singing...

(Refrain)
Bye bye Warrior Princess, bye,
Saw my soul in the mirror and the mirror don't lie.
That warrior girl was lookin me in the eye,
Singing "This'll be the day that I die,
This'll be the day that I die."

(Verse 3)
Now for two years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rolling stone
But that's not how it's gonna be
When Gabby sings, my Amazon Queen
In a sweet voice with heart so clean
And an eye that looks right into me
Oh, and while my thoughts were miles apart
The li'l bard stole my thorny heart
The courtroom was adjourned,
A verdict was returned.
And while Ares tried to make me fight,
The love we made all through the night
It kept me sane in Gabby's light
The day the warrior died.
We were singing...

Refrain

(Verse 4)
Helter Skelter in a summer swelter
Never knew Gabby until I felt 'er
Eight miles high and falling fast
I hope that I can make it last.
I don't want this lovin' to ever pass
Let the mem'ries fade of my evil past.
Now the forest air is sweet perfume
While Gabby sings a merry tune
And I got up to dance
Oh, so glad I got the chance
'Cause the fates they tried to make us split,
My bard and I refused to quit.
Do you recall the joy of it,
The day the warrior died?
We started singing

Refrain

(Verse 5)
And there we were both in one place
The tender look on my love's face
It's come our time to start again
So come on Jack be nimble Jack be quick
Joxer, sit on a candlestick
'Cause death is the warrior's only friend
And as I watched her on the rampage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel but my bard
Could break that warlord's guard.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the matrimonial rite
Aphrodite's laughing with delight
The day the warrior died
She was singing...

Refrain

(Verse 6)
I met a girl who sang so sweet
And I asked her to quit dogging my feet
But she just smiled and followed me
I went down to my bruised ego
Where I'd found the warrior years ago
But the thoughts there said the warrior wouldn't be.
And in the roads the children screamed
The lovers cried and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
My defenses all were broken
And the woman I love so true
Eyes of green looking in my blue
She healed me as no one could do
The day the warrior died
And we were singing...

Refrain (2x)

Notes

Note 1:
Sorry if the scansion is a little weird in places. I tried. I didn't have a recording of the song available to follow along with, but I did have my brother, who loves the song and knows it by heart, look over it and check it out.

Note 2:
The tone is somewhat dark and angsty (except verse 4 which is somewhat raunchy at the beginning). Hey, so is the original.

Note 3:
You can sing the refrain either "Bye bye, War'yor Pri-in-cess, bye" or "Bye bye, War'yor Princess good-bye." The former sounds a little more clunky, but the latter forces you to rush the second syllable of "princess," so you decide.

Note 4:
I realize that "soul" doesn't rhyme with "mirror." Sorry.
